Bath Magic & Dogs: Homemade Recipe for Coconut Oil Cleansing Bath Bombs

I love bath magic. It’s fun and it’s super soothing to my soul. I always feel 100x better afterwards. Dogs get stressed out too though, especially the working dogs like ESA’s and service animals. In my life my dog King is my ESA and is working hard on his service training. King can become tired and depressed too if he can’t unwind from his daily duties. So I use my secret weapon: Coconut oil. Coconut oil is such an amazing oil that even our dogs can enjoy its benefits. Coconut oil has been hailed to be a pretty magical oil as well in the witch communities. For my craft and this recipe the oil’s purpose is to cleanse and purify. We want our pups happy and ready to take on the world with us after this special bath!

Time: 1- 1 ½ hours (including mold set time)

Yields: Roughly 24 bath bombs

Ingredients:

1 cup baking soda

½ cup citric acid

½ cup corn starch

½ cup Epsom salt

3 tablespoons coconut oil, Make sure it’s divided up (I use Nutiva Organic Coconut Oil, holds better)

1 teaspoon almond oil

Lavender Essential Oil (If you don’t like lavender you can safely use peppermint, rose, eucalyptus, or rosemary oil can be used in its place. All these oils have relaxing magic properties)

½ cup of dried lavender buds (you can substitute this with other herbs like rose petals, sunflower petals, chamomile flowers, etc.)

Bath bomb mold (Or a muffin tin works)

Note: I do not use any food coloring in my bath magic. Dogs have sensitivities to dyes. If you want to use something for color use shimmer glitters. Stores like Lush sell shimmer for home use.

Let’s get started!

  1. Take all the dry ingredients and stir together with a whisk or fork. Make sure they are well mixed together then separate evenly into 3 bowls.
  2. Measure 1 tablespoon of coconut oil out and melt it in the microwave for 30 seconds or until fully dissolved. Stir in 1/3 teaspoon of almond oil and then 5-6 drops essential oil. I know most recipes for bath bombs say you can use like 10 drops of oil in your mixtures but for a dog this amount is too harsh. We want this blend to be gentle and calming.
  3. Pour the coconut oil mixture you just made into one of the bowls with dry ingredients. Using your hands, mix the mixture together. It’s during this part that I really focus my energy and intent on the purifying and cleansing magic I want to manifest in these bath bombs. Feel the energy leave from your hands into the mixture as you break apart and smooth the ingredients together.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 for the other 2 mixture bowls.
  5. Pack the mixtures into your bath bomb molds. If you want bath bombs like mine, scoop the mixture into a muffin tin and pack it down until it’s ¾ of the way full. Then smooth out the top. If you are packing in a ball mold, pack the mixture in the two halves until it’s overflowing then squish super well together to close.
  6. Freeze for 20 minutes.
  7. When removing the bath bomb from the molds, warm the sides with your hands first to melt the coconut oil a bit. Squeeze the sides until it comes out. Muffin tin users carefully warm the sides and gingerly flip the tin over a towel and gently tap the bombs out. Do not wail on the molds or the bombs break apart.
  8. Store away in a dry cool place. I personally keep my homemade bath bombs in the freezer to keep them fresh for longer.

How to use: Simply draw a warm bath and place the bath bomb into the water. It will fizz and release the oils within it. Soak your pup for 20-30 minutes. During this time play your pup’s favorite music and sing along. Dogs love music just as much as we humans do. This simple act is full of so much love that it’s purity amplifies the intent in the bath bombs to cleanse away your dogs stress. Your singing raises vibrations as much as chanting a common well-being spell. At the end of the bath both you and your dog will feel closer and happier!

⚠️WARNING⚠️

DO NOT USE ESSENTIAL OILS ON PUPPIES UNDER 10 WEEKS OF AGE. IF A DOG IS PREGNANT OR NURSING DO NOT USE ESSENTIAL OILS. THESE OILS ARE MUCH TOO HARSH FOR DEVELOPING PUPPIES AND CAN MAKE PUPPIES VERY ILL OR WORSE DEATH.

DO NOT USE MORE THEN ONE BATH BOMB ON YOUR DOG AT A TIME. NO, DOUBLING UP WILL NOT MAKE THIS EXTRA MAGICAL OR EFFECTIVE.

BATH MAGIC SHOULD BE CONFINED TO ONCE A WEEK AT MOST WITH YOUR DOG. USE OF THESE ESSENTIAL OILS ON DOGS TOO FREQUENTLY CAN LEAD TO DRY SKIN, HAIR LOSS, OR RASHES EVEN WITH CORRECT USE.

IF A DOG DOESN’T LIKE THE SCENT YOU ARE USING DO NOT FORCE THEM TO ENJOY IT. IT CAN CAUSE UNDUE STRESS AND TRAUMA TO YOUR ANIMAL. YOU WANT TO PAMPER THE PUP NOT TORTURE THEM FOR YOUR CRAFT; THAT’S ANIMAL ABUSE.

IF YOUR DOG HAS AN ALLERGIC REACTION, WASH WITH DISH SOAP TO REMOVE OILS AND BRING TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY. TO AVOID THIS PROBLEM TAKE A SMALL SPRAY BOTTLE (8 OZ) AND ADD A DROP OR TWO OF THE ESSENTIAL OIL YOU WANT TO USE. SHAKE WELL AND SPRAY LIGHTLY ON YOUR DOG. WAIT 24 HOURS. IT’S A GENTLE WAY TO MAKE SURE YOUR PUP IS SAFE.

Thanks again and let me know what you guys want next 🙂 Fair winds witches!
